Types of fixed deposits

Regular

These are the standard FDs offered by banks and financial institutions. Investors deposit a lump sum for a fixed tenure ranging from 7 days to 10 years at a predetermined interest rate.

Tax Savings

Also known as tax-saving FDs, these FDs allow investors to claim deductions under Section 80C of the Income Tax Act, 1961. However, they have a lock in fixed at a minimum of 5 years.

Special

Similar to standard FD, however banks offer a higher interest rate if the amount is not withdrawn for a specific period.

Corporate

This type of FD is offered by corporates and NBFCs. It comes with similar features such as flexibility in choosing the tenure and guaranteed returns and offer higher interest rates than bank FDs.

Regular Income

Pays a fixed amount periodically - monthly or quarterly - depending upon the lumpsum amount invested.

Senior Citizen

Specifically designed for senior citizens, these FDs offer higher interest rates compared to regular FDs. The age criteria for availing senior citizen FDs may vary among banks but typically start from 60 years and above.

Flexi

Provides flexibility and convenience and can be linked to your savings account. Gives you the option to limit the amount in your savings account and automate the transfer of any excess into the FD.

Cumulative

In cumulative FDs, the interest earned is reinvested in the FD account at regular intervals (usually quarterly or annually), leading to compounding of interest. The maturity amount includes both the principal and accumulated interest.

Non Cumulative

Unlike cumulative FDs, non-cumulative FDs pay out interest earnings periodically either monthly, quarterly, half-yearly, or annually, depending on the investor's preference.

FAQs on Fixed Deposits

A fixed deposit, commonly known as FD or term deposit, is an investment avenue offered by banks, NBFCs and corporates. It enables investors to deposit a lump sum amount for a predetermined period at a fixed interest rate.

Through a FD, you lock in your funds for a specified duration and earn interest on the deposited amount.

The FDs are also available for various time frames, ranging from short term tenures of a few days to long term options spanning up to 10 years. The interest rate is predetermined by the financial institution, based on the chosen tenure.

Upon maturity, the principal amount is returned to the investor. Additionally, the interest accrued can be disbursed periodically, including monthly, quarterly, half – yearly or annually, as per investor preference.

Fixed deposits offer a secure and reliable investment avenue, providing investors with the flexibility to tailor their investment tenure and enjoy steady returns over the investment period.
